Monthly Reflection: September 2024

As we reflect on September, it has been a month of impactful engagements and growth for Justice Desk Africa. Our journey took us to Zambia, where we spent time with our Youth Ambassadors schools and conducted impactful community trainings.

Our iNtsika yeThemba boys participated in a powerful Level 1 and 2 camp, while our incredible Mbokodo Level 4 girls launched their 'Care 4 You' Mental Health Campaign, raising awareness and sharing resources with the community of Bonteheuwel.

We were honoured by a visit from Siya Kolisi and the Kolisi Foundation, a moment of inspiration for all. Our Youth Ambassadors have been busy leading GBV awareness campaigns in their schools, while the PSI Team brought essential child protection training to Mariasdal Combined School in the Free State, helping foster safer learning environments.

With so much happening, we are deeply grateful for your continued support in making these initiatives possible. Let’s keep pushing forward as we create lasting change together!

CEO Jessica Dewhurst in Zambia

Our team visited Zambia earlier this month to spend time with our Youth Ambassador schools and conduct trainings with rural communities and local organisations in Lusaka, Mazabuka, Livingstone, and Mongu. Together, we explored Human Rights, justice, and how to become powerful agents of change.

Justice Desk Africa has been in Zambia since 2015 and since then, our Zambian Everyday Activists have changed so many lives.

We visited our Justice Societies at St. Edmund’s Secondary School in Mazabuka, Changa Changa Primary School in Mazabuka, St. Rafael’s Secondary School in Livingstone, and St. John’s Secondary School in Mongu to conduct Human and Children's Rights trainings.

In Mongu, we conducted a Human Rights training with the Western Cluster, made up of different Christian Brothers and Edmund Rice network staff members, who work in various development projects in rural Zambia. We also met with the SDG Local Community group for a training on Human Rights and justice.

From classrooms to community halls, we witnessed the strength, resilience, and passion of our Zambian family. We are endlessly inspired by the dedication of those we met, and we’re so grateful to our Justice Desk Africa team in Zambia for making it all happen.

This is what change looks like – and we can’t wait to continue the journey together!

iNtsika yeThemba Level 1 and 2 Camp

Our Level 1 and 2 camp was an unforgettable experience of growth, reflection, and empowerment. This camp was all about breaking barriers and having open discussions—especially around sex education, consent, privacy, and boundaries.

We also explored the Children’s Bill of Rights, empowering our boys to identify, defend, and uphold their rights. We balanced learning with fun—visiting Fish Hoek Beach to catch waves and build sandcastles.

Thank you to everyone who attended our first Justice Club Session. The Justice Club is made up of our monthly donors and volunteers. The purpose of the evening was for our Heroes to speak directly to our monthly donors to help them understand the impact that their donations have.

It was an evening filled with meaningful conversations, insights into our initiatives, and heartfelt testimonies from our Heroes. Would you like to become a part of the Justice Club? Sign up below!

Mbokodo Level 4 Campaign

Well done to our incredible Mbokodo Level 4 Heroes! Their 'Care 4 You' Mental Health Awareness Campaign was a wonderful success. A big thank you to the parents and community members who showed up in support.

Our Heroes shared vital information about mental health, distributed helplines, facilitated engaging activities, guided us through a calming meditation session, and even sold bracelets to raise funds for their program.

Siya Kolisi and Kolisi Foundation visit

Siya Kolisi and Kolisi Foundation Visit

We were honoured to welcome Siya Kolisi and The Kolisi Foundation team for an engaging and inspiring morning! As co-funders of our iNtsika yeThemba Program, their visit was a powerful reminder of how partnerships can drive real change.

Siya had an inspiring conversation with the iNtsika boys, who shared how the program shapes their daily lives. Siya also expressed his pride in their journey to becoming positive role models.

Mariasdal Trainings

Our Psychosocial Intervention (PSI) team conducted child protection trainings at Mariasdal Combined School in the Free State, focusing on empowering learners with knowledge about trusted adults, safe and unsafe touch, personal boundaries, and cyber safety.

Teachers also received training on creating safe school environments, encouraging student reporting, and being sensitive to the needs of students who may have experienced trauma.

Justice Desk Africa is incredibly committed to the protection of Children's Rights, and trainings like these enable us to empower other people to also become Children's Rights champions.

Panelists for Women's Month Discussion

Panel Discussion to close off Women's Month

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our first ‘Faces Over Facts’ panel discussion on ‘Her Rights, Her Voice: How Women Experience Legal Services’. It was an engaging and thought-provoking dialogue, filled with powerful insights from our panelists and meaningful contributions from the audience.

This event was the perfect way to close off Women's Month, but the conversation doesn't end here. Let's continue this critical dialogue every month as we strive to create a future where women are heard, protected, and empowered.

Mbokodo Heroes

Mbokodo Session 15

This session was all about unlocking the power within our Heroes to confidently tell their stories, embrace leadership, and use their strengths for good. Our Level 3's focused on healthy vs unhealthy relationships, and how to build strong and respectful connections.

After lunch, we recharged with self-defense and meditation for all levels.

In Memoriam of our Intern Brook Cheuvront

We were heartbroken to hear that our beloved intern Brook Cheuvront tragically passed away due to a hiking accident. In honour of Brook’s life and legacy, we held a special tribute on Saturday with our iNtsika boys to commemorate her contributions and the passion she brought to our shared mission.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Brook’s family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time. Our thoughts are with them as we stand together in grief and remembrance. We will carry her memory with us as we continue our fight for justice and human rights.
